Mapping Chile’s Endangered Andean Deer-Using GPS and Remote Sensing Imagery

  This project proposes to analyze the endangered Andean deer (huemul) distribution by mapping out known location of deer relative to various threats, habitat suitability and corridors will provide a better understanding of the deer’s ecology and a foundation for a focused strategy to improve protection. The maps that will be produced can drive scientific exploration of the huemul, while serving as a baseline to monitor the species

  I will be fully immersed in the community through the project work, the university classes I will be taking in Chile and during my personal time when I can engage in extracurricular activities. For the Fulbright project, I will be collaborating and communicating directly with local rangers, professors, students, biologists and landowners.The university setting will provide opportunities to meet peers, join clubs and make friends.

  I look forward to working for non-governmental organizations, like the Wildlife Conservation Society or the World Wildlife Fund, on environmental policy in Washington DC. I am also considering interning for the United Nations Environmental Program. After a few years building work experience, I plan on pursuing a Masters or Doctorate in Ecology and International Environmental Politics based on the research I am doing on huemules
