2018 US Scholars present their investigations in Chile during their nine months visit

 

Dr. Cecilia Aragon comes from University of Washington and her presentation was about Visual Analytics of Social Media Data. “The large amount of data requires a quantitative and quality analysis”, she said. She works with a group of professionals from different study backgrounds. This cross cultural communication improves everything she stated. Dr Aragon will be posted at Universidad Federico Santa María and working with Prof Raúl Monge.

 

Dr. John Garland, from Oregon State University will be working with Elias Apud Simon at Universidad de Concepción on Safety and Health in Forestry in Chile Perspectives across the century. Chile seems to be in the ´40s of the UNited States in this área, he explained , but will turn into an example for the rest of the countries in South America by its improvements in these areas by establishing cause and effects in accidentes. The most frequent ones from just walking in the Woods while harvesting is under way.

 

Dr. Ramón Mata-Toledo is a Professor in Computer Science and sets up data science programs. He Works at James Madison University and will do so in Chile at Universidad Adolfo Ibañez with Dr. Alejandro Jadresic. Teaching and Research in Big Data Science with emergent Technologies is his expertise. His approach will be a “hands on to understanding methodology and tools in Big Data Science from a business perspective versus a predictive modeling.

 

Dr. Sandor Toth, from University of Washington has a Project called: “Multi-Objective spatial organization to provide forest ecosystem services from Chile´s plantation forests”. In other words its maximizing the management of the environment : forests , timber production, stream flows, carbón sequestration, while minimizing the loss , for example,of native forests to mega fires, while provinding forest ecosystem services. He will be posted at Universidad de Chile, with Dr Andrés Weintrub and at Universidad Adolfo Ibañez with Dr. Marcos Goycolea.

 

Dr Vladimir Kaczynski, from University of Washington will be “contributing to higher quality of the academic programs and to the research on Balanced Use and Management of the Marine resources”. He will be working both with Dr Samuel Hormazával Fritz and Dr. Exequiel González at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso. He chose to come to Chile because of its” long exposure to the marine shore and because Chile is a leading economy in the continent”.

 

Dr. Thomas Long called in from the UK, where he is still working at University of Reading, but will promptly arrive to Santiago to work with Dr. Alfonso Donoso, at Pontificia Universidad Católica on “Chile, the US, and Regionalism.

 

Dr Gregory Biging, also away, called in from University of California, Berkeley. Biometrics is his field of study there. On arrival he will approach “ Improving the urban component of the First Comprehensive Chilean land cover map”. He will work on these with Cristian Estades at Universidad de Chile. Biodiversity and “monitoring urbanization in Chile and improving it” will be part of his work. He wants to “map out urbanization with the use of satélites by capturing the images of countries with all its lights lit up”.
