Michael Rush US Student 2018: July´s report

I visited our field site at Coyhaique Alto to download data from the weather stations, and maintain the equipment. I began constructing and implementing the model that I am applying to our field site at Coyhaique Alto using input from my adviser and other researchers at the Centro de Investigacion en Ecosistemas de la Patagonia. I continued to work with the Direccion General de Aguas in Coyhaique developing a forecasting methodology for streamflows (that will be presented at the Reñaca conference in August).

I plan to continue developing the collaboration with the DGA, continuing improving the accuracy and utility of the flow model at Coyhaique Alto to produce the most relevant information for the region, and maintaining the data acquisition at Coyhaique Alto.

I think my collaboration with the Direccion General de Aguas continues to be one of the most impactful (and unexpected) parts of my project. The water managers that I am working with at the DGA have many ideas for improvements to their forecasting and water rights administration activities that they simply don’t have the time to develop on their own.

Winter in Patagonia! Snow and ice makes travel fairly difficult at times, but public transportation is good. The persistent pollution due to woodsmoke makes Coyhaique a fairly toxic and dangerous place to be.
