The Impact of Volcanic Eruptions on Coigüe Trees

  • Project Proposal

My research in Chile will focus on evaluating the impact of volcanic eruptions on coigüe trees growth in native forest ecosystems using tree rings.  I will further understand the importance of and involvement in native ecosystems among people of different sectors (community, public sector, private sector, NGO, academia) as I continue to develop my studies.

    Final Report

In June I was able to go with a team to core trees at Volcán Calbuco, and have processed these cores in the lab and in July and August have begun to count and measure rings, along with applying to a Congreso de Ecología de Chile.

The Fulbright regional enhancement activity gave me the chance to do an investigation of a topic I found interesting to me: local conflicts over land cover change. I enjoyed the process of researching and preparing the paper, and would like to see (from future regional outings) encouragement for students to publish the findings that they submit, or perhaps anthologizing all the papers in a more formal way.
