Genetic and Environmental Control of Developmental Transitions: Regulation of Lin28 During Xenopus Metamorphosis

  • Project Proposal

In order to further understand the molecular link between genetic programs and hormonal control during developmental transitions, I propose to study the regulation of expression of heterochronic gene Lin28 . Dr. Fernando Faunes’ laboratory located at the University of Andres Bello in Viña del Mar is an ideal location to conduct this research. The lab recently published results demonstrating that the expression of heterochronic gene Lin28 is downregulated during Xenopus metamorphosis and that the overexpression of Lin28 disrupts the expression of components of the pituitary-thyroid axis.

Therefore, during the course of my Fulbright Study/Research grant I propose to study the transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation of Lin28 . During the first half of the Fulbright, I will study the endogenous expression of Lin28 and its regulation by thyroid hormones. Then I will focus my attention on understanding how nutrient availability changes the regulation of Lin28 expression during larval development. To address these specific aims I will use cellular and molecular techniques previously used in Dr. Fernando Faunes’ laboratory.
